An ethereal and beautiful album of Christmas music by Chapel Choir was released today. A Winter's Night features a selection of classics including 'Ding dong! Merrily on High', 'Hark the Herald', and 'I Saw Three Ships'.
The Chapel Choir recorded the album in early January in the inspiring surroundings of Merton College Chapel, Oxford. It is one of the best places to record in the country; atmospheric with incredible acoustics. The choir recorded fourteen pieces over three days, accompanied by Onyx Brass, a professional ensemble. Singing and recording for up to seven hours a day, it was an incredible experience for the pupils as they learnt about the production and recording processes.
The album is being released on the Signum Classics label and is available to purchase from Cornflowers, on College Street, Winchester as well as online.
Winchester College has a choral tradition that started six centuries ago, and is the only school to maintain this in its original form. The youngest members of the choir, the Quiristers, have sung services in the Chapel for over 625 years. In modem times the Chapel Choir has evolved, performing internationally and renowned for its excellence.
Applications to join the Quiristers in September 2021 are now open.
