What is involved?

From 1 January onwards, value-added tax (VAT) will be applied to school fees. We have updated our fee schedule accordingly to reflect these changes.

Fees for 2024/25

Following a letter to parents in September 2024 and updated government guidance, we can now confirm fee arrangements for the rest of the academic year.

From 1 January 2024/25, the fees (inclusive of VAT) are as follows:

  • Boarding pupils - £20,742 per term
  • Sixth Form Day pupils - £15,347 per term

To reduce the impact of this change in the middle of the school year, the increase for Spring and Summer 2025 will be limited to 10%. For those impacted by VAT, invoices for these two terms will therefore reflect the above fee with a discount applied, resulting in:

  • Boarding pupils - £19,014 per term
  • Sixth Form Day pupils - £14,068 per term

The discount will not apply to those with fees-in-advance schemes in place prior to 29 July 2024, where the fee credits for the term are equal to or exceed the fee payable, unless VAT becomes applicable to those fees.

Families with bursaries have received individual communications on their child’s fees for the year.

Fees for 2025/26

Fees for the academic year 2025/26 will be set in Spring 2025.

OTHER CHARGES

Registration
The registration forms, and deadlines for applying, are set out on our admissions pages for 13+ and Sixth Form. From 1 January, a non-refundable fee of £400+VAT is payable upon registration.

Acceptance of conditional offer
For those pupils joining us in Year 9, a fee of £2,000 is paid when you accept the conditional offer of a place by 1 July of Year 6. This fee will be credited to your Spring Term invoice in your child’s first year. It is, however, not refundable if you decline the place, having accepted and paid the fee.

Deposit
A deposit is paid in November of Year 8 on acceptance of your child’s place. For UK citizens, the deposit is £4,000, and for non-UK citizens, the deposit is one term’s fee. The deposit will be refunded within four months of your child leaving the school, less any outstanding fees or extras if applicable.

Music lessons and LAMDA
The cost of music and LAMDA lessons delivered from 1 January 2025 onwards will be subject to VAT.

Microsoft Surface
A Microsoft Surface device is required for all pupils. The school will provide the device at point of joining and the cost of the device will be spread across your first three bills.

Pupils requiring a student visa
For pupils starting at Winchester from September 2025 onwards, an annual charge of £1,200+VAT will be payable for each pupil requiring Winchester College to support a Child Student Visa or Student Visa application. This charge covers the additional costs to the school of supporting those pupils, including Visa applications, administration, monitoring and reporting requirements. The school must adhere to these compliance standards as set out by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) as a condition of its continued ability to support student visa applications.

For those who started in or prior to September 2024, the £1,200 charge above does not apply. However, a charge of £550+VAT will be payable for each Child Student Visa application during your time at the school.

Fees in advance scheme
Once an offer letter has been received, confirming your child's place at the school, a lump sum may be paid in advance of your child’s entry, covering up to five years of fees for the school, and providing a discount on the full fees. Contact the Finance team for more information.

Financial support
Winchester offers an extensive programme of means-tested financial support

We also award Scholarships and Exhibitions for those pupils with exceptional academic, musical or sporting talent. Scholarships and Exhibitions do not carry an automatic remission on school fees. However, free individual tuition is provided for sports scholars and musicians.

Financial support must be requested upon registration. It is only in exceptional cases of hardship, where a family has experienced significant and unexpected changes to their circumstances, that we will consider temporary financial support for a pupil who is already at the school.
