Recent graduate Wilfred was awarded the Walter Lawrence Trophy for his unbeaten innings of 183 scored against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
The Walter Lawrence Trophy, now in its 89th year, is awarded for the fastest hundred of the season, and is open to all domestic county competitions as well as One-Day Internationals, T20 Internationals, The Hundred and Test matches in England.
The College’s Head of Cricket, Paul Gover said “Wilfred’s innings against the MCC was as good as you’ll see at a college level. Despite playing for College, Hampshire Academy, and Hampshire Second XI all during term time, he also achieved excellent A-level results.
As one of our first intake of sports scholars, Wilfred has been a shining example of what can be achieved both from an academic and sport perspective.”
Wilfred is currently spending the winter playing cricket in Sydney before heading to Durham University in September.
Being given the opportunity to represent your country is perhaps one of the greatest honours for an athlete and one that Sebastian, entering just his 4th year at the College, has just achieved.
After an excellent season for the College, Sebastian has been selected for the forthcoming England U19 tour to India where they will play in the Quadrangular Series against India U19s A and B teams, as well as Bangladesh U19s.
With the majority of the squad are in their final year at school or have just left, Sebastian will be the youngest player in the squad.
Established in 2018, the Winchester College Sports Award Programme provides successful candidates with specialist coaching sessions, regular, assessed strength and conditioning training and a dedicated tutor to help them achieve their sports goals and manage and succeed in their academic endeavours.
Mark Burley, the Director of Sport said, “Both Wilfred and Sebastian have illustrated huge dedication to their cricket and did so whilst succeeding with the academic pressures of sitting A levels and GCSEs. Both are shining examples of how the sports scholarship programme operates to support pupils’ development into high calibre sportsmen, but also balanced individuals.”
