Kids in Museums 'Takeover Day'
On Friday 18 November 2022 our Treasury museum, joined 80 arts and heritage sites across the country in inviting children to take charge for the day. Kids in Museums' 'Takeover Day' was launched in 2010 to increase children's access to the nation's historical institutions.
Since 2017 we have been working with All Saints Church of England Primary School to offer their pupils the chance to create and curate their very own exhibition in Treasury. For this year's Takeover Day, we welcomed 30 children, aged 10 and 11, to explore the museum and learn about its collections before each designing their own artwork. Once framed, the children curated an exhibition of their works, and hung them on the walls for display. Having practised their museum guiding skills, pupils welcomed their families to a private view of the exhibition and shared stories of their experiences and creations. The exhibition was open to the public over the weekend.
Headteacher of All Saints Primary School Mrs Jane Hall said their pupils had "delighted in being expert curators and exhibitors, and are so proud of what they have achieved. All Saints' children have had the most amazing time – thank you to all involved."
Treasury Manager, Suzanne Ceiriog-Hughes commented: "Kids in Museums' Takeover Day is one of the highlights of our year. It’s a great opportunity to use our collections to inspire a new generation of artists, designers, historians, and museum-lovers. It gives the children the chance to learn in so many ways, and to have a great deal of fun at the same time. Year 6 and their teacher, the wonderful Mrs Ellison, were a pleasure to work with."
