Wykeham Day Highlights

The school was looking its best under a sweltering sun for this year’s Wykeham Day as we welcomed over 1,500 parents, OW’s and future pupils and their families onto the College grounds. For many the day is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the company of old friends, catch up on the latest news from the school and watch or take part in a wide range activities, for others it is their first chance to see many areas of the school beyond the boarding houses.

The day started with the ceremonial unveiling of the repaired and reinvigorated “Humby Bollard” in St Michael’s Passage, complete with Latin verse, bagpipes and a guard of honour, and finished with the traditional Gun Run on Lavender Meads, this year won by Commoners. In amongst this were a huge array of performances, lectures, tours and exhibitions for everyone to enjoy. Highlights included expert talks, exhibitions of the College silver, paintings and photography, as well as first rate sport on the pitches, in the PE Centre and on the river for all to enjoy.

Music, as ever, was exceptional and ranged from recitals in Music School to Cantores Episcopi in War Cloister and finished with rousing jazz and rock performances on the stage in front of enthusiastic supporters.

A final mention must go to our wonderful caterers, Chartwells. Between the various houses and central catering they produced lunch for close to 2,500 people as well as match teas, packed lunches and an afternoon tea tent, near the main stage.
